Louis Tomlinson: “I was in the car with my son when Niall called me about Liam’s Death.”
On The Diary of a CEO podcast, Louis Tomlinson reflected on his friendship with Liam Payne — the highs of One Direction, the struggles that followed, the loyalty that never faded, and the devastating call from Niall Horan asking if he’d seen the tragic news.
“I was in the car with my son in L.A.,” Louis said quietly. “And before he even said the words, I had that feeling — the same one I had when I lost my sister Félicité.”

Liam Payne, 31, died in Argentina in October 2024 after falling from a hotel balcony. The coroner later confirmed multiple injuries and traces of alcohol, cocaine, and antidepressants.
The Friend He Couldn’t Save
Pausing for a moment, Louis began describing Liam — not as the pop star the world knew, but as the friend he loved.
“Liam had this puppy energy,” he said. “He really wanted to be liked. He was the safest pair of hands in the band. People misunderstood him, but he just wanted peace — he wanted to be good.”

“We were both trying to be solo artists and find success.” When Liam’s singles started to take off, Louis was proud. Then, things flipped — Liam began struggling while Louis’s career gained momentum. Still, Liam showed up.
“He came to my All of Those Voices premiere,” Louis recalled. “None of the other boys would’ve done that — fact. He sat in a cinema watching my success while he was struggling. That’s putting himself second.”
After the premiere, Liam posted a long, emotional tribute. “It was the sweetest, nicest fucking shit,” Louis said.
But when fans mocked him, Liam deleted it. “People thought he wanted attention,” Louis added, “but really, he just missed those moments.”
“The real reason Liam could’ve been misunderstood was because he didn’t really operate with a filter. He would just feel something, say it, and then go.”
Liam Payne had flown to Argentina to see his friend and former bandmate Niall Horan on tour — it was during that visit that he tragically died.
The Final Goodbye
After Liam’s death, Louis shared a message that broke the internet: “I’ve lost a brother.”
“I feel beyond lucky to have had you in my life,” he wrote then. “I’m so grateful we got closer since the band — those hours on the phone, laughing about everything we’d been through — I thought I’d have that for life.”
In November 2024, Louis joined Niall Horan, Harry Styles, and Zayn Malik at Liam’s London funeral — a reunion no fan ever wanted to see.
In a rare joint statement, the band called the loss “devastating.”
“The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever,” they said. “We’ll miss him terribly.”
Now, nearly a year later, Louis still struggles to put the grief into words. “That put a pin in One Direction,” he said quietly.
