The masked killer never needed a plot, only a carpet. On Wednesday night the “Scary Movie” franchise rolled one out at the Paramount Theatre, and the people who built the joke in 2000 came back to stand on it.
Anna Faris, Marlon Wayans and Shawn Wayans reunited for the world premiere of “Scary Movie,” the sixth installment, which opens in theaters Friday. They were joined by returning castmates Chris Elliott, Heidi Gardner, Anthony Anderson, Damon Wayans Jr., Kim Wayans and Gregg Wayans.
Lizzo worked the carpet without a part in the movie. She earned the invite on the soundtrack, where she and Sexyy Red turn up on a track called “HOES.” Carmen Electra, who took the franchise’s first on-screen kill back in 2000, came as an alum. Natalie Alyn Lind, Deon Cole, Elle Chapman and Backstreet Boy AJ McLean filled out the rest.
Not that the rollout has been smooth. The film’s first trailer in 13 years drew accusations of transphobia over a gender-identity gag, per LADbible, and early reviews have landed in the low 30s on Rotten Tomatoes. Jordan Peele passed on a role, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Marlon and Shawn Wayans have produced, written and starred in the series since “Scary Movie 2” in 2001, and they spent this week promoting it on brand, “hotboxing” Times Square with Faris on Monday. The parody opens Friday, a quarter century after the original.
